Designing with Northern Latitude Light
1. The Rule of Multiple Light Points
In traditional Nordic interiors, a single central overhead glare light is never used. Instead, a room is layered with 5 to 7 low-intensity lighting islands—table lamps, floor sconces, recessed baseboard grazers, and candle brackets. This creates depth, shadow play, and warmth during dark winter afternoons.
Our studios mandate dimmable 2200K to 2700K warm circadian LED emitters with a Color Rendering Index (CRI) exceeding 96 for true timber rendition.
2. Diffused Glare Prevention
Following the seminal work of master architects like Poul Henningsen and Alvar Aalto, all direct bulb filaments are concealed behind multi-tier reflectors, layered opal glass, or pleated washi paper shades.
This transforms direct points of light into soft radiant clouds that reduce eye fatigue and promote evening melatonin release in alignment with northern circadian cycles.
